I have enjoyed my time at Emerge since starting in 2005. My primary role as a supported employment consultant is to work closely with job seekers, focusing on their abilities rather than disability, and matching these with the needs of employers. We help with career planning, CV development, job search and preparation for interviews. Many individuals need ongoing support to sustain their jobs and this we provide for as long as it is required.
I have a Bachelor of Arts and a Post-graduate Certificate in Career Development. My early career with the NZ Government changed with a move as a “trailing spouse” to Japan, a couple of postings lasting 14 years. I was fortunate being able to work there; ESOL teaching initially and then recruitment consulting with an American company. On my return, to Auckland, I had an ACC related role providing vocational assistance to individuals disabled by accidents.
In my own moves between countries and cities I have learnt how important it is to have a job, the sense of self-worth it gives, the self-development that comes from new experiences and learning, and the attachment to the community it provides. The right to work, for those who aspire to do so, is fundamental to Emerge’s philosophy.
