It’s in the detail…
Joshua is an Emerge transition student, currently in his last year at Mahinawa School. As part of his transition year Joshua has a work experience placement at Capital City Ford (CCF) in Porirua. Joshua has been working with car groomers, Michelle and Jean assisting them with Vehicle detailing.
Each groomer usually works on a designated car. A car was kept aside last week for Joshua to work on. Joshua was more than happy to groom the ‘flash’ XR6 Ford falcon and did a brilliant job according to Jean.
Joshua says he feels great cleaning the cars and likes making sure he does it properly, “I like vacuuming the cars and cleaning the wheels, I like talking to Michelle” he says.

His motivation and easy going nature has not gone unnoticed with Michelle saying “He’s shown initiative and that he wants to be able to do this, that’s the beauty of it”. “It works well for us and for him”. She noted that Joshua seems comfortable at work and does a great job, ‘We give Joshua tasks that he likes to do, which helps to build his focus up’.
Joshua has enjoyed his work experience so much that he has asked to extend the hours that he works. Bruce Radford the Manager of (CCF) is happy for him to do this.
“Having students from Emerge and assisting them with work experience has been a very satisfying and rewarding experience. Josh has proved himself to be fully capable of the tasks given and is a very cheerful and happy worker” he said.
The work experience has proved to be a success for all those involved including Joshua’s School.
Lee Coffey, Joshua’s teacher agrees that this has been a successful placement, “Joshua is certainly happy to come down here on Wednesdays, which in itself is a huge thing” she says.
