Pet Doctors

It seems that Junes newsletter is somehow a bit themed around animals – dog day, little monkeys, pet doctors…what next?

Along with Katie from Newlands College I had first-hand experience of observing a dog being spayed at Pet Doctors. This was on her first day there and if this isn’t insight into what working in animal care and management might be like I don’t know what is! It meant I had no need to worry about Katie being able to cope with any tricky situations during the rest of her work experience placement.

Katie has spent every Wednesday morning for the last eight weeks at Pet Doctors veterinary clinic in Kaiwharawhara. Her duties included providing care and support in the cattery and administration tasks, as well as the opportunity to observe vet consultations and operations supported by Jenny Price, team leader at Pet Doctors. Jenny says “Students experience a true insight into the profession and get a realistic idea of what it is about. A lot of young people can have unrealistic expectations of what working in a vet clinic entails (no pun intended) and this helps students see what really goes on.”

What I liked and I think Katie would agree was the welcoming environment at Pet Doctors. It may not be all fluffies but the fact that the staff are friendly, approachable and take the time to explain makes all the difference.
