Transition Job Jam
We recently ran our first ever ‘transition’ job jam which proved to be very successful. We had a good number of students in attendance with most, faithfully attending each week. Not only did these students commit to the sessions they did so with enthusiasm, with some combating additional challenges like transport along the way. We covered a range of topics over our six sessions from navigating the net to young peoples’ rights under the law with special guest speakers from the Whitireia Community Law Centre. Our most memorable session would have to be our interview session. Students were required to participate in a mock interview with our Supported Employment colleagues and Emerge’s Operations Manager. A prize was awarded to the best overall interviewee but all our students did a fantastic job in turning up prepared and in their best threads. Our overall winner won a much needed top up for his cell phone. Developing a course specifically for our transition students has given us, as a transition team, the opportunity to see what works best for transition students in particular, as well as having a lot of fun. We are now able to refine and further improve our course content for next time. We look forward to running this course again in the new year.
