Emerge Transition Service

We aim to provide a vibrant Transition Service which meets the needs of students in their last year of college. We intend to create a seamless movement into post-school activities and this might include initiating community involvement, furthering employment or education skills and linking students into recreational interests.

Where historically, transition funding has been attached to a transition service provider and the provider has been responsible for locating the number of students they will work with, new funding criteria means that the funding will be attached to the student and will be paid out to the provider at different times during the year upon receiving evidence of these services. It will be up to each student which service provider they would like to work with during the transition process. The student and their family/whanau will need to indicate to the school which service they would like to access.

We offer a Transition Programme to students in central Wellington. We are funded by the Ministry of Social Development to work with students aged 16-21yrs who are ORRS funded and are in their last year of school.

We are constantly seeking ideas about how we can meet the needs of students who do not meet that funding criteria but who do need support during the transition process. If you would like to discuss this or know someone who may benefit from our services, please contact us.

Transition Initiatives

Mainstream Transition Pilot Programme funded by the Todd Foundation

In 2007 Emerge has partnered with State Services Commission Mainstream Supported Employment Programme in order to create the Mainstream Transition Pilot Programme. This Pilot Programme is for students who need support through transition into employment but who are unable to meet ORRS funding criteria. We are working with 5 students who begin their two year Mainstream Employment Programme at the end of their final year. They will have an initial four month transition period and build their hours over that time. They will then go onto work in that position for the remainder of the two year period. This programme has been created in order to meet gaps in services for students who need support but who are not funded to receive specific transition services.

Transition Expo 2007
In 2007 Emerge staff were on the steering committee for the Transition EXPO held on July 31st at the Michael Fowler Centre. The expo is designed to provide Students at secondary school that experience disability, as well as their teachers, families and other support networks with an opportunity to learn more about the different opportunities for support, service and advice available to them as they explore their future. Stall holders included Employment, Vocational, Educational, Recreational and other core service providers associated with Disability issues. We would like to thank everybody involved for making this another successful event.

Exploring Futures
Coinciding with the EXPO was the publication of the Exploring Futures booklet which looks at Transition in the Wellington Region. It contains information for students, teachers, and family/whanau about services and issues relevant for the transition process.
